Ah, I've seen the 3 wise monkeys today - another thing to cross off the list. They are a 17th century carving at Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. The saying 'hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil' came from this carving... well apparently it probably came via China to Nikko, Japan. Spend half a day wandering through this area of shrines and temples and be amazed, very amazed. The best artists in the world were sent there in the Edo period and the work that is there now is magnificent. The nature in Nikko and the surrounding National Park is spectacular. Apparently Autumn and Spring are the times to go to see the mountains ablaze with colour. We went in Summer and absolutely loved it.
