I received an email today (via facebook of course) from a student I worked with earlier this year in Japan. She's Swedish, seven and she used to paint beautiful things for me. She asked me if I still remembered the butterflies and unicorns. I was saddened to realize that in all the craziness of leaving Japan, moving to a new place in Melbourne, starting a new job doing something I haven't done in over 20 years etc, I had forgotten about them. We would sit in my room together, this beautiful girl and I, and paint the magical worlds that she could see. No talking, because she didn't talk much in a school environment. A wise little girl. I think silence is often more than golden. Thank you Matilda for reminding me.
